Variations on the Surname
According to various records such as death, baptism, LDS and census records, Jane's maiden name has been spelled a variety of ways. It has been listed as Whitman, Weightman, Wheatman, and Wightman.
One reason for the variation of spellings is likely to be the error of whomever recorded information for major events such as baptisms. The vicar of the parish where the children were baptized would record the names as he heard them spoken. Saying the names aloud - Whitman, Weightman, Wheatman, Wightman - you can hear the similarity in the sound of the names. There is also a question of accents and pronunciations. The area of Cumberland County where the children were born and baptized is approximately 15 miles from the border of Scotland. The surname Wightman and Weighman are Scottish. It is quite possible that Jane was from a parish just over the Scottish border. |
