Cream Pitcher

The bottom of the pitcher is marked with a square of mustard colored background with a clipper ship embossed in black. Under the ship it reads Gray's Pottery, made in Stoke-On-Trent, England.

The front of the pitcher, brightly decorated in deep blue and silver over a white base, depicts a rustic village scene with images of an inn or tavern. The words Ye Old Jug Inn are written at the base directly under the scene.

The reverse side has a poem:

When this you see, remember me
And bear me in your mind.
Let all the World say what they will
Speak of me as you find.

Initially I thought this delicate creamer was a gift to Jane from a family member or close friend. Maybe it was purchased as a farewell gift. The sentiment certainly reads as if the gift giver knew they wouldn't see Jane and family again. After exploring information on A.E. Gray & Co., manufacturers of earthenware located in Stoke-on-Trent, my theory has proven incorrect. A.E. Gray was established in 1907. Obviously this creamer did not arrive in America with the Dalton family in 1841/42.
