While this site is currently the home of the Delaware County Historical Society's webpage, delcohistory.org is an independent project, not affiliated with any single organization. Any historic organization in Delaware County, Pennsylvania is also welcome to call this site "home," at no cost, and without obligation.

This site is dedicated to those individuals who have spent so much of their time collecting historical information about their families and communities. The original purpose of this website was to house my transcription of "The History of Delaware County" by Henry Graham Ashmead from 1884. I have found this text to be very detailed, yet relatively easy to read. The description of early events and places are particularly vivid, being only several generations removed from it's early subject matter. He writes with a familiarity of the places and people from the previous century. To him, many of the structures and landmarks from the 17th and 18th century were still present - yet to be obscured by the development of the 20th century.

The process of scanning, recognizing and HTML coding of this 700+ page text is particularly difficult and time consuming. Due to the age and style of the type, and the fact that I am working from a "photoreproduction" of the original text, I have been unable to guarantee 100% accuracy of every word. Therefore, I am currently looking for assistance in proofreading those pages that I have online. If you feel that you'd like to help in this project, please contact me at the above address.
